With a large majority of the countries’ culture being Buddhist, this makes it a pretty safe place to travel as their mannerisms tend to be calm and welcoming.

Sigiriya is a must-visit when travelling Sri Lanka – an enigmatic summit with remains of an ancient palace at the top? Who wouldn’t want to see that!

Overall, there are some incredible top-destinations in Sri Lanka, but it’s recommended to go off the beaten path and discover it for yourself.

On the south coast, set sail on a whale watching expedition in Mirissa, shop the colourful boutiques of the fort city of Galle or shack up at the uber-luxe Cape Weligama hotel, occupying a cliff next to the ocean. Make the climb up to the Tea District, where precarious winding roads will lead you into the heart of the country’s tea plantations, or, towards the center, climb Sigiriya Rock for views far and wide.

WOMEN SOLO TRAVEL INDEX

The safest cities for women traveling alone

The “Women Solo Travel Index” shows which cities are the safest for female solo travelers. Sri Lanka ranked #2 in Women Solo Travel Index – The safest cities for women traveling alone.

Colombo, Sri Lanka

Second overall, but number one for anyone considering a trip to Asia, is Sri Lanka’s capital, Colombo. Unlike Montreal, Colombo is significantly cheaper, reports say: taxis in the city cost around 22 cents per kilometer – the fifth cheapest price in the study – and a one-bedroom apartment is only around 14 euros per night. Out of the top five, Colombo received the best rating for the country’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic, ranking 14th overall. Although Sri Lanka is extremely vulnerable to the spread of the virus due to its thriving tourism industry, the authors of the Women Solo Travel Index write that the government has taken strict measures including island-wide travel restrictions and isolation zones to curb the spread. The only element where Colombo still has some catching up to do is lighting. Still, the Sri Lankan capital ranks sixth in terms of the percentage of women who feel safe walking alone at night. More than three in four women surveyed (77 percent) said they felt safe.

Best vegan travel destinations to visit in 2022

Best vegan travel destinations to visit in 2022. Sri Lanka might just be the ultimate vegan travel destination. As a primarily vegetarian culture, most local dishes are made naturally vegan from ingredients like lentils, jackfruit, coconut and aubergine. Not only is Sri Lankan food delicious and nutritious, it’s some of the most affordable food in the world. Most local meals in Sri Lanka won’t set you back more than £1. Yes, you heard that right!

6)

COLOMBO

Colombo is usually misunderstood from the beginning.
Despite being Sri Lanka’s biggest city, it isn’t the capital (that would be Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte, which is a great fact to break out at your next pub quiz), and many travelers skip it over in favor of the island’s gorgeous beaches and tea farms.
But in 2022 it’s time to pay attention to the city’s underrated design destinations, including late architect Geoffrey Bawa’s home, which is now a mini museum and guest house called Number Eleven. The next year is bringing a spate of promising new hotels to the city, including properties by Amari, Grand Hyatt, Marriott, Sheraton and ITC.
Sri Lanka does have its share of delicious curries, but don’t assume that the food is the same as in neighboring India.
Start the day by filling up on egg hoppers heaped with coconut sambal at the Palmyrah’s lush breakfast banquet, head to the Pettah Floating Market to stock up on bananas in nearly every color of the rainbow, and end the day watching the beach sunset at the Galle Face Hotel sipping a grapefruit-infused take on a Negroni at the aptly named Traveller’s Bar. Everything tastes better paired with the island’s own ceylon teas.
